Marquette Claims No. 5 Seed In BIG EAST Tourney
April 24, 2017
The BIG EAST tourney will be held at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C. for the second year. The winner of the eight-team tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Golden Eagles dropped a 4-3 decision at Xavier on April 8 in the only regular season meeting between the two programs this year.
Marquette claimed the No. 2 seed in its two previous seasons, as well reaching the championship match both years. The Golden Eagles fell short of the title in 2016 when they dropped the final match 4-0 to St. John's.
Marquette's hit a high note this season when it went on an eight-match winning streak spanning a month. However, Marquette will be entering the BIG EAST tournament on a four-match losing streak, narrowly dropping their final regular season match to Youngstown State, 4-3, on April 23.
The Golden Eagles have been driven by the underclassmen this season. Sophomore Greg Anderson holds the most singles wins on the squad at 17 play at the No. 3 position. Freshman Luke Smrek helped out MU in the No. 2 singles location, where he tallied 15 win in his debut season. Sophomore Alvaro Verdu was a key contributor once again this year by filling No. 1 singles position, and claimed 12 wins through the campaign.
The winner of the Marquette/Xavier match will advance on to see DePaul/Creighton in the semifinals on Saturday, April 29.
