April 25, 2011
The Marquette University men's tennis team has earned the No. 6 seed in the 2011 BIG EAST Conference Championship and will face third-seeded USF Friday at 8 a.m. CT in South Bend, Ind.
The University of Notre Dame is hosting the nine-team event for the second-straight campaign, with the champion earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The MU/USF winner will advance to face the Notre Dame/Georgetown winner at 8 a.m. CT on Saturday. The loser moves to the event's back draw.
"USF is a very talented team that has posted some really good results this year," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "We know that they will be prepared because they are very well coached. As a team you want to play your best tennis at the end of the year and we look forward to doing that on Friday. "
The Golden Eagles enter the tournament with a 13-10 overall record and faced a total of seven nationally ranked squads in 2010-11. MU has posted a 6-7 mark in league tourney play since moving to the BIG EAST in 2005-06 and last faced USF in the postseason during the 2006-07 campaign.
Marquette's roster features four players with double-digit dual match win totals, led by freshman Dan Mamalat's 15-8 mark. Sophomore Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley is 13-9 in dual contests, with each matchup coming at the No. 1 position. The doubles tandem of Gutierrez Crowley and Mamalat is 11-6 overall to pace the squad, along with the duo of Jose Manuel Munoz and Jonathan Schwerin, which owns an 11-8 slate.
