MU Tennis Players Fischer, Mamalat Named To All-BIG EAST Team
April 26, 2012
Fischer, a senior from Berlin, Germany, is the first women’s honoree from Marquette since the program joined the BIG EAST in 2005-06. Mamalat, a sophomore from Philadelphia, Pa., is the first men’s player to claim the accolade since since all-time singles wins leader Dusan Medan in 2009-10.
Fischer topped the roster in singles victories and concluded the season with a 19-12 overall record. She was 13-8 in dual matches, seeing action at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. She picked up 15 wins in doubles, teaming up with classmate Gillian Hush to post a 10-8 mark in dual matches at the No. 1 spot. Fischer opened the dual match season by winning 11 of her first 13 outings.
“Olga is a tremendous competitor and rose to the occasion when she competed,” head coach Jody Bronson said. “I know she really wanted to finish with a great year and I think she did a good job of competing on the court while also leading the team.”
Mamalat concluded the 2011-12 campaign with a 21-12 overall record, including a 13-9 mark in dual competition. He opened the year with seven-straight wins in the fall and saw a majority of his dual-match action at the No. 2 position. He concluded the year playing No. 1 singles after an injury to junior Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley. He also helped MU collect 15 victories in doubles competition.
“It’s a great honor for Dan to be recognized by the league,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “Dan has lofty expectations for himself as a player and has worked really hard to meet them.”
