Golden Eagles Celebrate 2009-10 Campaign At Team Banquet

Milwaukee - The Marquette University men's tennis team celebrated the team's 2009-10 accomplishment's Sunday night at the program's annual awards banquet.
Senior Dusan Medan and Mark Rutherford claimed individual awards, as did freshman Otavio Perim and sophomore Drake Kakar. Marquette posted an overall record of 16-6 this season and earned the team's first-ever national ranking.
Medan claimed Most Valuable Player accolades for the third-straight year after posting a 27-10 singles record and earning the program's first individual national ranking (currently 86) in at least a decade. His victory total led the roster and all but one of his 16 dual match wins came at the No. 1 position. The Nis, Serbia, native concluded his career ranked first all-time at MU in singles wins (88) and fifth in total victories (141).
Rutherford, one of the top student-athletes in the BIG EAST Conference, earned the Academic Award for the second consecutive year. The Calgary, Alberta, native owns a 3.6 GPA in finance/business economics (minor in criminology studies) and was recently the recipient of the 2009-10 BIG EAST Institutional Male Scholar-Athlete Award (top student-athlete at each of league's 16 Universities). He finished his four-year career first in MU's record book in both doubles victories (103) and total wins (184). Rutherford was also third in all-time singles decisions (81).
Perim captured the Most Improved Player honor in his debut campaign with the Golden Eagles. Perim finished 18-14 overall in singles action, including a 12-7 mark in dual matches. He was a constant fixture in both the singles and doubles lineups and his singles win total was the third-highest on the team.
Kakar was the recipient of the Coaches Attitude Award, which recognizes the team member with the best work ethic, both on and off the court. Kakar was 14-5 overall in singles play and a near perfect 5-1 in dual match competition.
