NCAA Championships Central

The 2018 BIG EAST title-winning men’s tennis team is well represented on the league’s all-tournament rosters, highlighted by Player of the Year accolades for junior Alvaro Verdu and Coaching Staff of the Year honors.

Verdu also earned a spot on the BIG EAST First Team and was joined on the six-member squad by sophomore Luke Smrek. Freshman Luis Heredia Gomez, a candidate for newcomer of the year, was tabbed BIG EAST Second Team and MU’s coaching staff of Steve Rodecap, Jud Shaufler and Vukasin Teofanovic was also recognized.

Verdu was named the Most Outstanding Player at the conference tournament after posting a trio of wins at the No. 1 position and the Elda, Spain, native has now been recognized in each of his three seasons at Marquette. Smrek, who was the BIG EAST’s top newcomer in 2016-17, posted a 13-6 record in dual competition (primarily at No. 2). Heredia Gomez is second on the roster in overall victories (18) and clinched a pair of victories at the league championship.

Marquette’s coaching staff guided the program to its fourth-straight appearance in the league championship match in 2018 and first team title. The Golden Eagles are 17-6 overall and will face No. 8 Illinois at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday, May 12 in the program’s first-ever NCAA Championships appearance as a team.
