Marquette Adds Transfer Daniel Fernandez
June 13, 2013
Men's tennis player Daniel Fernandez, who spent the 2012-13 campaign at New Mexico State University, is transferring to Marquette, head coach Steve Rodecap announced.
Fernandez, who will sit out in 2013-14 due to NCAA transfer rules, will have three seasons of eligibility with the Golden Eagles.
Fernandez was named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Freshman of the Year in 2012-13 after posting an overall singles record of 15-4. He was a perfect 4-0 in league dual matches and didn't drop a single set in those outings. A two-time league player of the week, Fernandez was also named first team all-conference. The Aggies finished the season 14-9 overall and earned the No. 4 seed in the WAC tourney.
"We are extremely pleased that Daniel has decided to play for us," Rodecap said. "He will be a tremendous addition to our team and possesses all three aspects we look for in a recruit. He is a great young man, an outstanding student, and is very dedicated to being the best tennis player he can become.
"He has competed one year in college and had excellent results in both singles and doubles," Rodecap added. "I personally look forward to coaching him and believe that he will be a great fit for our program."
The Golden Eagles return seven letterwinners from the 2012-13 squad, including two-time All-BIG EAST selection Dan Mamalat. Marquette was 14-13 in dual competition and matched the program's best-ever BIG EAST Championship finish with a fourth-place effort.
