The Marquette University men’s and women’s tennis teams will open their respective 2014-15 seasons this weekend at the 39th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic (Sept. 12-14), hosted by The Town Club in Fox Point, Wis.
The eight-team field will compete in singles and doubles competition in a round-robin format. Matches begin Friday morning and will conclude Sunday afternoon. The men’s bracket will feature Marquette, Wisconsin, Air Force and Ball State. On the women’s side, Marquette will battle Wisconsin, South Carolina and Western Michigan for the tournament titles.
“We are very excited to again be hosting an extremely talented group of players from Marquette, South Carolina, Wisconsin and Western Michigan,” head women’s coach Jody Bronson said. “The players from these teams will be able to develop special relationships with housing families as well as community supporters.”
A champion and runner-up in singles and doubles will be honored at the conclusion of the tournament by using a point system that compiles results from all of the weekend’s matches. A sportsmanship award will also be presented.
“The Milwaukee Tennis Classic is a tremendous event for us to begin the season,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “The Town Club provides the perfect facility to host an elite-level event and the format allows our guys to participate in a large number of quality matches.”
The Town Club features several banks of clay courts, making the tournament one of the more unique experiences in the country. The historic club has a 100-year-plus tradition of hosting prestigious tennis tournaments, starting with the Annual Wisconsin Open Championships in 1904 and including the National Clay Courts in the late 1960s.
“The Town Club has been a great partner to both Marquette University and the MTC providing outstanding facilities, including superbly maintained clay courts, wonderful meals for players and coaches and a warm, welcoming atmosphere with excellent viewing for spectators,” said Chas Mulcahy, President of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
