The Marquette University men's and women's tennis teams opened their respective 2014-15 campaigns Friday at the 39th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic at The Town Club in Fox Point, Wis.

The eight-team event continues through Sunday afternoon and features a round robin doubles and singles format. Play begins at 9 a.m. each day.

The women's team opened the day with doubles action against rival Wisconsin. After splitting matches at the No.2 and No. 3 positions, MU claimed the deciding match at No. 1 with a thrilling 8-7 decision. Senior Ana Pimienta and junior Erin Gebes rallied after trailing 4-2, to claim the win over UW's tandem of Lauren Chypha and Maria Avgerinos. MU's Aleeza Kanner and Ali Dawson posted an 8-4 win at No. 2.

Marquette was forced to move inside due to rain to complete first-day singles action against Western Michigan. Gebes posted a quick 6-1, 6-1 win over Barbare Eristani at No. 2 singles and also earning wins were Kanner sophomore Diana Tokar, who was making her MU debut after playing her freshman campaign at Milwaukee

The men's squad started action with doubles competition against rival Wisconsin. Sophomore Nick Dykema and senior Vukasin Teofanovic posted a narrow 8-7 win at No. 1, but that was the lone victory MU would collect.

In the squad's singles matchup with Ball State, alma mater of head coach Steve Rodecap, the Golden Eagles were able to claim five of the seven outings. Sophomore Daniel Fernandez, who redshirted in 2013-14, was victorious in his Marquette debut after a 2-6, 7-6, 6-1 against BSU's Lucas Anderson. Freshman Andre Romanello picked up a win in his collegiate lidlifter and Dykema, sophomore Mackenzie Stearns and junior Gleb Sklyr also earned victories for MU.
