MU Tennis Teams Enjoy Successful First Day At Milwaukee Tennis Classic

The Marquette men's and women's tennis teams both encountered a successful opening day to their respective 2009-10 campaigns, as both squads began play in the 34th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
The eight-team field will be competing in both singles and doubles action through Sunday afternoon at Western Racquet Club in Elm Grove, Wis. The squads return to action at 9 a.m. Saturday morning.
The MU men's team opened the season by taking six of the team's eight singles matchups against Ball State. Freshmen Jacob Straus and Otavio Perim claimed their first victories as Golden Eagles, as did junior transfer Jose Manuel Munoz.
Head coach Steve Rodecap's doubles lineup featured three duos making their collegiate debuts. Straus and senior Dusan Medan dropped a tough 9-8 decision to Northwestern's Alex Sanborn and Spencer Wolf.
The women's team posted two victories in its three doubles outings, earning a pair of win over Alabama. Juniors Rachel Hush and Christina Ruiz claimed an 8-5 decision at the No. 1 position and sophomores Paola Calderon and Olga Fischer followed suit at No. 2.
Three Golden Eagles claimed singles wins to conclude the afternoon. Calderon and Ruiz accounted for two of the victories and freshman Kelly Barry downed Western Michigan's Maria Nivia 6-4, 6-1 for a win in her collegiate debut.
