Complete Milwaukee Tennis Classic Day Two Results

The Marquette University men’s and women’s tennis teams continued action at the 34th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic Saturday in Elm Grove, competing in singles and doubles action.

The eight-team field, consisting four men’s and four women’s squads, will conclude competition Sunday afternoon at Western Racquet Club. Individual champions will be announced in singles and doubles based on a point systems utilized with results from the entire weekend.

The men’s squad opened action Saturday morning against in-state rival Wisconsin in singles action. Senior Dusan Medan earned his second victory in as many outings, downing UW’s Billy Bertha 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) at the No. 1 position. MU’s lineup featured three newcomers (Jose Manuel Munoz, Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley and Otavio Perim) and unfortunately the Golden Eagles came up short in a number of close matches, dropping three set tiebreakers along the way.

The MU men concluded their day with doubles competition against Ball State, claiming victories in three of the four matchups. Medan and freshman Jacob Straus posted an impressive 8-5 win at the No. 1 position and the tandem of Mark Rutherford and Munoz held on for an 8-6 decision at the No. 2 spot thanks in part to Rutherford’s big serve down the stretch.

The women’s team faced three different opponent in singles action, but only freshman Kelly Barry was able to claim a win. The Elmhurst, Ill., native downed Rachel Denny of Western Michigan 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 for her second victory on the weekend. MU also took on nationally ranked Alabama and Wisconsin.


 

 

MU’s Christina Ruiz and Rachel Hush claimed an 8-5 win over Hannah Berner and Aleksandra Markovic of Wisconsin at the No. 1 position in doubles play. The Badgers earned a quick victory at the No. 3 spot and also claimed a hard-fought 9-8 victory against MU’s Paola Calderon and Olga Fischer.
