The Marquette University men’s and women’s tennis teams wrapped up season-opening play at the 35th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic Sunday afternoon with both singles and doubles action at the Town Club.

Marquette’s Rachel Hush and Christina Ruiz claimed the event’s runner-up spot in doubles following the duo’s 8-1 victory over Western Michigan’s Jill Pastunink and Miloslava Shustova. The MU tandem finished the weekend 2-1, also claiming a win over Kansas State on Saturday.

The women’s squad team capped the weekend by claiming four of its five singles contests with Kansas State. Sophomore Olga Fischer made quick work of KSU’s Petra Chuda at the No. 4 position with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Also victorious for the Golden Eagles were Gillian Hush, Chelsea Utting and Kelly Barry. The win for Utting was the first of her MU career and Barry’s tourney also included a win against a nationally ranked opponent on Saturday.

Freshman Thibault Troude of the Marquette men’s team claimed his second win in as many days, rallying for a tiebreaker decision over Northwestern’s Chris Jackman. Troude, who earned his first collegiate victory on Saturday with a win over Wisconsin, dropped the first set and eventually outlasted Jackman 11-9 in the 10-point breaker.

Marquette dropped a trio of doubles matches to rival Wisconsin to wrap up play at the event.
