The Marquette University men’s and women’s tennis teams continued play at the 40th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic Saturday at The Town Club, taking advantage of picture-perfect weather conditions.

The eight-team field will conclude the event on Sunday afternoon with singles and doubles action. Singles and doubles champions will be named, along with the sportsmanship award winner after the final point is scored.

The women’s team opened the day with singles competition against FIU. Senior Aleeza Kanner posted a quick 6-3, 6-4 win over her opponent and freshman Courtney Hebard earned her first collegiate victory with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 win over the Panthers’ Andrea Lazzaro at the No. 5 position. MU concluded its afternoon with doubles competition versus former BIG EAST member Cincinnati. The Golden Eagles were able to claim one of the three matchups, with junior Diana Tokar and freshman Courtney Hebard teaming up for a 6-1 decision at the No. 2 spot.

The men’s squad also began its day with singles play, facing Valparaiso in a total of six matches. Senior Daniel Fernandez and sophomore Andre Romanello dropped a total of just four games in their straight-set wins at the No. 1 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Marquette would end up claiming four of the contests, with juniors Mackenzie Stearns and Kristian Trukov each claiming difficult three-set victories.

MU concluded the afternoon with doubles competition against Ball State. The Golden Eagles claimed all four of the contests over the Cardinals, with the tandem of Fernandez and freshman Alvaro Verdu coasting to a quick 6-0 win at No. 1.
