Elm Grove -
The 33rd Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic concluded Sunday afternoon the way it began, with perfect playing conditions at the Western Racquet Club in Elm Grove, Wis.
The season-opening eight team event featured singles and doubles competition in men's and women's action, which began Friday morning. A point system was utilized to determine champions and runners-up.
Marquette's Stephen Shao earned the Charles Mulcahy Sportsmanship Award, marking the third time in the last four years a Golden Eagle has claimed the honor. Alabama's Paulina Bigos earned the same honor on the women's side.
The MU men's team opened action on Sunday with an impressive performance in singles, taking six of seven matches against instate rival Wisconsin. Each of the six victories came in the tiebreaker and four of the contests were of the come-from-behind variety.
Seniors Shao and Trent Hagan posted identical scores of 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) to claim wins at the top two positions. Junior Dusan Medan rallied after dropping the first set, as did Niko Boulieris, Mark Rutherford and Juan-Martin Paredes.
The Marquette women earned one victory in three doubles matches against Texas A&M to begin the team's action. Senior Robin Metzler and sophomore Rachel Hush teamed up to post an 8-7 win over the Aggie duo of Morgan Frank and Sheri Oliver.
Freshman Gilian Hush earned a hard-fought singles win over Aleksandra Markovic of Wisconsin, posting a 7-5, 6-4 decision at the No. 3 position. Hush was the only Golden Eagle to post a win over the Badgers.
