Golden Eagles Continue 2009-10 Campaign At Ball State Fall Invitational

Sept. 23, 2009

Milwaukee - The Marquette University men's tennis team continues its 2009-10 campaign this weekend with competition at the Ball State Fall Invitational in Muncie, Ind.

The 16-team field will compete in singles and doubles action, with several flights slated for the three-day tournament. The field consists of: BSU, MU, DePaul, Green Bay, Illinois State, Northern Illinois, Dayton, Xavier, Detroit, Valparaiso, IPFW, IUPUI, Cleveland State, Eastern Illinois, Butler and Louisville.

This weekend's event marks a homecoming for Marquette head coach Steve Rodecap, a native of Anderson, Ind. Rodecap helped lead the Cardinals to three (1993-95) Mid-American Conference titles under legendary head coach Bill Richards.

"It's always nice to go back to where college tennis started for me," Rodecap said. "I have a lot of memories at Ball State and really enjoy taking my teams there to compete."

Four players made their respective Marquette debuts last weekend at the season-opening Milwaukee Tennis Classic. Freshmen Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley, Otavio Perim and Jacob Straus and transfer Jose Manuel Munoz saw competitive action in MU's lineup. Eight of the nine players on the roster represented the squad on the court and sophomore Jonathan Schwerin, who sat out because of injury, is expected to make the trip to BSU's campus.

The Golden Eagles and Cardinals did face each other in both singles and doubles at the Western Racquet Club last weekend.

"We will be looking for our guys to continue to make progress on their games this weekend," Rodecap said. "It should be a weekend where we can get a lot of matches under our belt, especially the younger guys."
