MU's Weekend Includes Trips To Ball State, ITA All-American

Junior Logon Collins returns to his native Tulsa for the ITA All-American

Sept. 26, 2012

Logon Collins and Vukasin Teofanovic of the Marquette University men's tennis team will head to Tulsa, Okla. this weekend for the 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men's All-American Championships (Sept. 29 - Oct. 7), while the remainder of the squad will compete in the 34th annual Ball State Invitational starting on Friday, Sept. 28 and running through the remainder of the weekend.

The ITA championships, held University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center, is the first national title opportunity of the 2012-13 collegiate tennis season. The tournament format features a two-day pre-qualifying draw, before players can advance to the qualifying (Oct. 1-3) and main draws (Oct. 4-7) later in the week. Doubles action is slated to begin on day two of the event with the qualifying draw.

Marquette will be part of a nine-team field at the Ball State Invitational, joining the host Cardinals along with Butler, Cleveland State, Dayton, Illinois State, IPFW, IUPUI and Louisville in competition.

Making the trip to Muncie, Ind. to represent the Golden Eagles will be sophomores David Packowitz, James Stark, Cameron Tehrani and freshmen Gleb Sklyr and Javier Varela Hernani.

Competition will be held at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, and consist of two draws of 32 in singles and two draws of 16 in doubles.

The Ball State Invitational serves as a homecoming for MU head coach Steve Rodecap, who played for the Cardinals from 1992-96. The Anderson, Ind., native helped BSU to three Mid-American Conference Championship titles (1992-93, 1993-94, 1994-95) during his playing career.

“This tournament obviously has special meaning for me, not just because I competed in it as a player, but also because I went to Ball State,” Rodecap said. “Hopefully the guys can put together a solid weekend after having last weekend off.”
