Golden Eagles Continue Season At Pair Of Events This Weekend
Sept. 30, 2009
The Marquette men's tennis team will travel to the Wildcat Fall Invitational, hosted by Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., for play this weekend.
Marquette joins Northwestern and eight other teams in the 10-team field: Toledo, Ball State, Purdue, Wisconsin, Iowa, DePaul, Drake and Western Michigan. The weekend will feature two flights each of singles and doubles in double elimination brackets.
Freshman Jacob Straus leads the Golden Eagles with five wins on the season, while classmate Otavio Perim and sophomore Drake Kakar are close behind with four singles victories apiece. The doubles team of Kakar and Perim is undefeated, posting three wins in two weekends of play.
At the Milwaukee Tennis Classic two weeks ago, Marquette hosted Ball State, Wisconsin and Northwestern. The Golden Eagles tallied 10 singles wins against Ball State, including two apiece by Kakar and Straus. Dusan Medan was the lone Marquette player to win in singles play over Wisconsin, while Straus and Perim both recorded singles wins against Northwestern. Three MU doubles teams came out on top over Ball State in doubles play.
“The Northwestern tournament has a strong group of teams that will allow our guys to continue to develop their games,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “We have had a busy few weeks that in the end prepares us for the dual match season. Our young guys are learning that competing at this level requires you to be mentally sharp all of the time, and there are no shortcuts.”
Four of the teams in the Wildcat Fall Invitational finished last season ranked in the top 75 nationwide by the ITA. Wisconsin led the pack, ending the season at No. 36, while Northwestern (46), Iowa (60) and DePaul (74) rounded out the rankings.
The Golden Eagles will potentially face four singles players ranked in the preseason top 125, as well as the No. 6 doubles team in the nation in Wisconsin's Moritz Baumann and Marek Michalicka.
Seniors Niko Boulieris and Dusan Medan will travel to the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., and represent the Golden Eagles in the three-day event. Both players will begin action on Saturday and their respective opponents have yet to be determined.
“It’s a great opportunity for Dusan and Niko to represent Marquette against the nation’s best players,” Rodecap said. “The All-American draws a great field and should provide both of them a great opportunity.”
