MU Men's Tennis Returns To Action At Ball State/ITA All-American

Oct. 2, 2008

Milwaukee - The Marquette University men's tennis squad will be in action this weekend at the 2008 D'Nova All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. on the campus of the University of Tulsa and at the Ball State Fall Invitational in Muncie, Ind.

Trent Hagan, Dusan Medan, Niko Boulieris, and Stephen Shao will travel with assistant coach Erick Martinez to the ITA's first national event of the 2008-09 season. The D'Nova All-American Championships pre-qualifying round features 256 singles players competing from Oct. 3-5. In order to advance to the qualifying singles round, players must win four rounds during pre-qualifying matches.

In order to prequalify for the event, teams are allotted spots based on their final rankings from the previous season. Marquette is one of 22 schools to prequalify four or more athletes. Other BIG EAST teams represented include Louisville, Notre Dame, and USF.

The remaining Golden Eagles will head to Muncie, Ind., to compete in the Ball State Fall Invitational. The event, hosted at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, is now in its 30th year. The tournament consists of a 17-team field; Ball State, Butler, Indiana State, IPFW, IUPUI, Marquette, Northern Illinois, Valparaiso, Eastern Illinois, Cleveland State, Purdue, Duquesne, Detroit, Dayton, Xavier, Illinois State and Wright State.

The tournament consists of four flights (A, B, C and D) of singles with draws of 32 players apiece. There will be four flights of doubles with draws of 16 apiece and consolation play for first round losers in both singles and doubles.

MU head coach Steve Rodecap, a 1996 graduate of BSU, returns to his alma mater for the event. In 2007, the Golden Eagles were represented in the title match in five of the six flights.

The Golden Eagles have been off for two weeks since the season-opening Milwaukee Tennis Classic (Sept. 19-21).
