Tulsa, Okla. -
Playing his sixth match in a five-day span, senior Dusan Medan of the Marquette University men’s tennis team rallied for a three-set victory Wednesday morning to earn a spot in the main draw of the 2009 D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Medan is one of just two players (Costin Pavel, Oklahoma) in the initial 256-player pre-qualifying bracket to advance to the main draw and is the first-ever Marquette player to claim a spot among the final 64 players. The main draw will be announced late Wednesday night, determining Thursday’s matchups.
“Dusan hung tough all morning long,” associate head coach Erick Martinez said. “He showed a lot of heart and represented Marquette with a great deal of pride. He was presented with opportunities and played tough at the right time.”
The Nis, Serbia, native dropped the first set to William & Mary’s Sebastien Vidal, but jumped out to a quick lead in set two to force the deciding frame. Both players had their moments early in the third set, but it was Medan’s finishing ability that proved to be the difference. Trailing 5-4 and on serve, he claimed the final three games to earn the 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 decision.
