MU Gears for Tough Competition at ITA Midwest Regional
Oct. 17, 2012
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's tennis team continues its campaign this weekend when it heads to East Lansing, Mich. for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Midwest Regional on Oct. 18-22. Michigan State's Outdoor Tennis Courts will serve as the venue for the competition.
"The ITA Regional is one the premier events that we play in the fall," Marquette head coach Steve Rodecap said. "It consists of all the best players in our region vying for a spot in the national indoor tournament."
A singles qualifying draw will be held where players must win three matches in order to advance to the main draw. Juniors Logon Collins and Dan Mamalat, along with sophomore Vukasin Teofanovic, have been selected to the main draw, while the five remaining MU players will have to earn their spot through the qualifying draw. Doubles action will take place throughout the weekend.
"It's the first time in several years that we have used this event as a team date," Rodecap said. "This will serve as a great opportunity for us to evaluate these guys and see who is ready to make the jump to the next level."
The Midwest Regional is one of 12 regional tournaments taking place this weekend. Players will be competing to solidify their spots in the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships held Nov. 8-11 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
