Men's Tennis Completes Fall Season At Texas Invitational

Milwaukee - The Marquette men's tennis squad will travel to Austin, Texas, to compete in the Texas Invitational this weekend from Friday, Oct. 31 to Sunday, Nov. 2.

Marquette and Texas (4th) will be joined by Texas A&M (23rd), Rice (22nd), Portland, Denver (45th), Lamar, Texas-Pan American, Texas-Arlington, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (75th), St. Edward's (Texas), and Oregon, with final 2008 ITA team rankings indicated.

The Longhorns squad finished the 2008 campaign ranked fourth nationally after losing in the NCAA Final to Georgia. Returning most members of a squad that finished 25-6 a season ago, Texas is represented by five players and two doubles teams in the preseason top-125.

Six members of the squad will make the trip to Texas, with junior Dusan Medan and seniors Stephen Shao and Trent Hagan remaining in Milwaukee.

In the opening round of men's open singles "A", Mark Rutherford will match up against Texas's Jon Wiegand and Niko Boulieris will face the winner of the Richard Filuka and Justin Raiti match, from, Lamar and St. Edward's (Texas), respectively.

Men's open singles "B" play features four Marquette athletes in competition with Drake Kakar against Portland's Nokoloz Kurdadze, Jonathan Schewrin against Oregon's Sho Higuchi, J.T. Christian against UTA's Jason Lateko, and Juan-Martin Paredes against Oregon's Mike Myrhed.

In men's open doubles, Kakar and Paredes will take on third-seeded Dmitry Novikov and Mike Pavlov from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Boulieris-Christian duo will face tough competition in fourth-seeded Oliver Sajous and Jon Wiegand from University of Texas, while Rutherford and Schwerin will face off against Texas's Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala, the second seeded team in doubles play.
