MILWAUKEE – Marquette University student-athletes and teams were honored for their accomplishments at the annual Blue & Golden Globes banquet on Sunday evening at the Harley-Davidson Museum in downtown Milwaukee. A total of 20 awards were bestowed, while MU’s six BIG EAST Conference champions over the past calendar year were also recognized.

Highlighting the banquet were the recipients of the Ralph H. Metcalfe Senior Awards.

Kristiyan Trukov (men’s tennis) and Meghan Niemann (women’s volleyball) were the winners of the Leadership through Academic Excellence award. Trukov claimed the men’s tennis team’s academic award during his sophomore campaign, and was named to the 2015-16 BIG EAST All-Academic Team.

Niemann was named First Team All-BIG EAST during her 2016 and 2014 campaign, in addition to three BIG EAST All-Academic honors (2012, 2013, 2015).

The Leadership through Service to Others award was received by Ryan Geller (men’s lacrosse) and Abigail Busse (women’s cross country). Geller lends his time to serving as the head coach for the Milwaukee Eagles, a wheelchair lacrosse team with the local VA hospital full of disabled and able-bodied American veterans. In their inaugural year, the Eagles finished in third place at the national tournament, and in its second season, had 18 athletes competing for two Eagles teams at the national tournament.

Abigail Busse is a senior Burke Scholar on the women’s cross country and track and field teams. She is the coordinator for Marquette University’s Campus Kitchen program, organizing cooking shifts and meal deliveries, and leading the food reuse/recovery initiative there. She also volunteers at Just One More food pantry, collecting leftover food from businesses to supply community members with meals. She has participated and lead Mardi Gras service trips to the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans to help that community continue to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. She is a tutor at the Benedict Center, helping incarcerated women earn GEDs, and a volunteer at the Urban Ecology Center, leading grade-school field trips in lessons on environmental sustainability and simple actions they can take to insure clean water and air. She is also on the Leadership Council of Chi Alpha Sigma.

Though Busse’s Burke Scholarship requires 300 hours of service at Marquette, she far exceeds that each year. She is a double major in economics, and international affairs, with a minor in social work & justice. Abby has a 3.6 cumulative GPA, and will graduate cum laude, and will begin graduate school pursuing her master's in economics in the fall.

The final leadership award handed out, Leadership through Athletics Excellence, was received by John Krzyszkowski (men’s track & field) and Morgan Proffitt (women’s soccer). Krzyszkowski was named the Track & Field Team MVP during the 2015-16 campaign, and won the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship in the javelin. Krzyszkowski set a MU record with a javelin throw of 227-8 feet/69.39 meters. The senior standout was also recipient of BIG EAST All-Academic honors three times so far during his career.

To go along with her leadership award, Proffitt also took home the President’s Award. A Columbus, Ind. native, Proffitt was named the 2016 BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Year, and was also a three-time all-league selection and a member of the NSCAA All-Region squad in both 2015 and 2016.

In addition to numerous weekly awards, Proffitt was a candidate for both the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy and Senior CLASS Award as a senior in 2016.

She started 83 of 85 career matches and scored 10 goals with three assists. As a defensive stalwart for the Golden Eagles, Proffitt helped MU to BIG EAST regular season titles and NCAA appearances in 2013 and 2016 and a tournament crown in 2013.

She also competed and trained with the U.S. Under-23 WNT in 2016-17 before being selected 12th overall in the 2017 NWSL College Draft by the Chicago Red Stars. She is currently competing in her rookie season this spring with the Red Stars alongside former MU teammate Mary Luba.
