February Blue & Gold Status Honorees Announced

Feb. 19, 2018

Each year at Marquette University, hundreds of student-athletes compete at the highest level for their respective sport. While the majority of people will notice their on-field accomplishments, often the individuals' efforts off the field remain un-publicized.

One of the many groups at Marquette University that is dedicated to assist and honor Marquette student-athletes is the Academic Support Staff. Beginning in September and running through April, the Academic Support Staff will pick four student-athletes that consistently excelled academically, athletically and in the community.

The first four members of the Blue & Gold Status award for the year 2018 are Jon Klaiber (men's cross country and track & field), Alexandra Goodrich (women's track & field), Julie Clayton (women's track & field), Lauren Van Kleunen (women's basketball).

Jon Klaiber - Cross Country and Track & Field

Jon Klaiber is a junior on the Cross Country and Track & Field teams. He is a double-major in Information Technology and Supply Chain Management in the College of Business. During the summer, he was involved as a volunteer leader with the Milwaukee Area Distance Running Camp. He has also served as a volunteer at the St. Vincent de Paul meal program, and as a volunteer at the Milwaukee Boys & Girls Club. Through Marquette Athletics, he participated in the STAR leadership program, and helps coordinate his team service projects.

Alexandra Goodrich - Track & Field

Alexandra Goodrich is a sophomore on the MU women's track & field team, studying Nursing. Alex has taken on a lead role in AIA (Athletes In Action), a faith-based peer group. She also participates in the STAR leadership development program, and has an active role in SAAC. She has become an active voice and creative contributor to SHAPE, the mental health and wellness group in Athletics, and is poised to lead that group next year. In addition, Alex is a peer tutor at the Al, and Dean's List student in her college.

Julie Clayton - Track & Field

Julie Clayton is a junior pole-vaulter on the MU track & field team. She is an Accounting major in the College of Business. She coordinated solicitations and organized donations for the event. Julie also led a shoe-drive within Marquette Athletics, coordinating collection and distribution of gently used athletic shoes to organizations in need in the Milwaukee area.

Lauren Van Kleunen - Women's Basketball

Lauren Van Kleunen is a redshirt freshman on the women's basketball team. She is majoring in public relations with a minor in marketing. She will be graduating with her undergraduate degree in three years and will be moving into graduate school, while still being part of the women's basketball team. She is a MAGIS Mentor in our MAGIS Mentor Program, where she is matched with a high achieving freshmen who is transferring into the world of Division-I athletics, as well as a prestigious school, to ensure they continue to have all the resources and mentorship needed to be successful. Lauren has also gone above and beyond the definition of supportive teammate by volunteering to accompany a fellow student-athlete to medical appointments, offering companionship in a stressful time.
