RV/- Marquette Outlasts Providence, 79-74

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's basketball team defeated Providence, 79-74, Wednesday night at the Al McGurie Center, led by Erika Davenport who netted 17 points and 10 boards en route to her ninth double-double of the season.
Providence (9-6, 1-3 BIG EAST) was led by Sarah Beal, who netted 24 points on 11-of-14 shooting, falling just three points shy of her career-high, which she recorded against Marquette last season.
The Golden Eagles (12-3, 3-1 BIG EAST) entered halftime with a 37-22 lead, closing the half on a 9-0 run. Marquette dominated in transition during the first 20 minutes, outscoring Providence 19-2 on the break.
Both offenses were stagnant in the first quarter, each tallying just 12 points on a combined 10-of-31 (32.3 percent) shooting. However, Marquette was able to improve on the mark in the second quarter, notching 25 points in the quarter, while limiting Providence to 10 points in the second frame.
Providence fought back in the third quarter, led by Jovana Nogic, who scored the team's first eight points of the stanza. After PC cut MU's lead down to six, the Golden Eagles would go on a 10-2 run to increase its lead to 14.
Providence registered 27 total points in the third, shooting 10-of-16 (62.5 percent from the field) led by Nogic and Beal who poured in 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Providence made a late fourth-quarter push, but was unable to overcome MU's double-digit advantage. Beal and Nogic combined for 33 of Providence's 52 second half points, shooting a collective 14-of-18 from the field.
Marquette returns to action on Friday, Jan. 8 when it travels to Queens, N.Y. to take on St. John's at 1 p.m. Central time on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
