Marquette Claims First BIG EAST Victory Over Seton Hall 69-60

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s basketball team used a 26-0 run midway through Saturday night’s game against Seton Hall to earn its first BIG EAST victory of the season, 69-60, over the Pirates at the Al McGuire Center.
The Golden Eagles (10-6, 1-2 BIG EAST) were paced by 20 points from sophomore forward Katherine Plouffe, while classmate Katie Young poured in a career-high 18. Sarina Simmons chipped in a career-high 10 assists to go along with five points and nine rebounds.
Junior guard Brittany Morris led the Pirates (7-10, 0-3 BIG EAST) with a game-high 26 points, while leading scorer Jasmine Crew and junior forward Terry Green each added 12.
The Pirates went 12:27 on the game clock without a point after a Morris jumper at the 6:16 mark of the first. That basket gave SHU a 26-18 lead before MU jumped ahead for good.
The Golden Eagles pushed their lead to 18 points at 44-26 on a layup by Chelsie Butler.
Marquette closed the first half on a 14-0 run to lead 32-26, and scored the first 12 points of the second frame.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 11 points in the first before scoring 22 of the final 27 points.
Marquette shot 56.3 percent (27-of-48) from the floor and 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from 3-point range.
Young led MU with a career-high five treys in the contest.
Morris led both teams with 16 points in the opening 20 minutes, while Plouffe scored 11 for MU.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday, Jan. 10 at the Al McGuire Center against Villanova at 8 p.m. in a game televised live on CBS Sports Network.
