NEW YORK – Behind a double-double performance by sophomore Katherine Plouffe, the Marquette women’s basketball team earned its first road win in BIG EAST Conference play Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden over St. John’s, 63-55.
Plouffe led all scorers with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Katie Young contributed 16 points and Arlesia Morse chipped in 11. The Golden Eagles (12-6, 3-2 BIG EAST) shot 51 percent for the game, including a blistering 58.3 percent (14-of-24) in the second half.
Junior guard Shenneika Smith led the Red Storm (11-7, 3-2) with 13 points
The Red Storm used a 8-0 run over the final 1:43 of the first half to go into the intermission with a 32-28 lead. The Golden Eagles responded with a 14-4 run out of the break to go ahead, 42-36.
The Golden Eagles took their first double-digit lead of the game with 7:00 to play, 55-44, thanks to a layup by Plouffe, but it was short lived as Smith drained a 3-pointer on St. John’s next possession.
The Red Storm came as close as four points, 59-55, with 56.8 seconds to play, but Simmons’ basket with 26 seconds to play sealed the win for Marquette.
Plouffe scored six of MU’s first 11 points, while Morse, Simmons and Young also contributed baskets.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 17 when they host No. 18/17 Georgetown at 8 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center. The game will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network.
