CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Despite double-doubles from Allazia Blockton and Erika Davenport, another second-half rally fell just short as the Marquette women's basketball team could not surpass Xavier, falling 71-66 on Friday night at the Cintas Center.

Blockton led four Golden Eagles (6-11, 1-5) in double figures with 22 points. It was the 10th time this season she has surpassed the 20-point mark. Davenport recorded 16 points, all in the second half, while McKayla Yentz and Natisha Hiedeman tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Davenport grabbed a career-high 12 boards, while Blockton pulled down 11 rebounds to complete their double-doubles, which was Blockton's seventh of the season. Amani Wilborn dished out a team-high five assists.

Marquette trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half, but closed out the second quarter with a 9-0 run, which cut the deficit to just seven points, 32-25 heading into the break. Blockton led with eight points as the Golden Eagles shot just 27.3 percent (9-33) in the first half.

In the final seconds of the third quarter, Davenport grabbed a rebound from Wilborn's missed free throw and powered up a layup as the buzzer sounded concluding the third quarter trailing just five points, 49-44.

The fourth quarter opened strong for MU as the squad continued to chip away at Xavier's lead before Blockton connected on a layup at the 8:02 mark, which tied the game at 51 and after Xavier scored on the next possession, Davenport powered up a layup to tie the game again at 53-53 with 7:32 left to play. The Golden Eagles were not able to gain a lead in the fourth, but had cut the margin to just four points, 63-59 at the 2:06 mark, and after Hiedeman sank a three-point shot, were within three points, but the Musketeers connected on two free-throws to ice the game.

Marquette finished the night shooting 35.4 percent (28-79) from the floor, including five shots from long range. MU narrowly outrebounded Xavier, 44-43, and totaled 23 second chance points, while holding Xavier to just eight.
