Marquette Falters, 67-52 at St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y.--Senior Arlesia Morse led the Marquette women's basketball team (4-14, 0-7) with 17 points as the squad dropped a 67-52 decision at St. John's on Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.
Morse shot 5-for-10, including four baskets from beyond-the-arc in the game and also grabbed four rebounds. Freshmen Kenisha Bell and Tia Elbert each recorded nine points, while Bell added eight rebounds, six assists and two steals.
The Golden Eagles trailed just four points, 40-36 with 13:51 left in the game, but St. John's kept connecting on baskets and slowly worked its way to a 60-47 advantage at the 3:56 mark.
Overall, MU shot 18-for-59 (30.5 percent) on the day and hit four three-point shots. The Red Storm had the advantage on the glass, 42-36.
Marquette opened the first half with a 4-0 advantage and remained close to the Red Storm throughout the stanza. The Golden Eagles trailed no more than six points, 26-20, but sank four consecutive free throws, which closed the gap to 26-24 at the 2:50 mark in the first half. Tia Elbert converted a layup and knocked down a jumper as MU trailed just 30-28 heading into halftime.
MU shot 45.5 percent (10-22) in the first and went 6-for-7 from the free throw line.
St. John's had three players score double digits, led by a game-high 25 points from Aliyyah Handford, while Danaejah Grant recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards.
Marquette will return home and open a four-game homestand beginning Friday, Jan. 23 when the team hosts Providence. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. CT at the Al McGuire Center.
