Marquette Holds on to Defeat Pittsburgh 74-65

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Redshirt freshman Lauren Tibbs recorded a career-high 14 points to help the Marquette women's basketball team (10-7, 2-2) hold to defeat Pittsburgh (9-8, 0-4), 74-65, at the Peterson Events Center Saturday afternoon.
Tibbs shot 6-for-12 from the field and pulled down five rebounds. Junior Katherine Plouffe nearly recorded a double-double as she tallied 13 points, grabbed nine boards and handed out a career-best eight assists. Sophomore Chelsie Butler also posted double figures with 10 points.
Junior Katie Young pulled down six rebounds, while Butler and sophomore Arleshia Morse took down five apiece.
Brianna Kiesel led all scorers with 18 points. The Panthers had four players in double figures.
MU held a 66-63 lead with 2:48 remaining, but Tibbs and freshman Brooklyn Pumroy scored back-to-back baskets to extend the lead to 70-63. Sophomore Cristina Bigica hit a jumper with 56 seconds left, which extended the lead to nine points.
The Golden Eagles shot 48.6 percent (18-37) in the first half and had a season-low two turnovers. MU pulled down 19 boards in the first stanza and was led by Plouffe and Simmons with eight points apiece.
MU outrebounded the Panthers, 43-39 and had a season-low nine turnovers.
Marquette will return home on Tuesday, Jan. 22 to host No. 15/13 Louisville at the Al McGuire Center. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network.
