Marquette Falls at Providence, 66-64

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was a close battle in Providence on Friday, but the Marquette women’s basketball team could not pull out a victory as the squad fell, 66-64 to the Friars, which snapped a four-game win streak.

Sophomore Allazia Blockton paced four Golden Eagles (16-5, 7-3) in double digits with 17 points, while senior McKayla Yentz poured in 12 points, including four from long range. Erika Davenport and Danielle King each recorded 10 points.

Providence (10-11, 2-8) had a huge night from Jovana Nogic and Sarah Beal as they combined for 52 of the Friars’ 66 points in the game with 27 and 25 points, respectively.

The Golden Eagles finished the night shooting 23-for-47 from the floor (48.9 percent), including 11-of-19 from beyond the arc.

MU headed into the fourth quarter with a 51-50 lead after the Friars nearly erased a 10-point deficit outscoring the Golden Eagles, 17-14 in the third quarter. Blockton secured a layup for a 53-50 lead early in the final quarter, but Providence answered with a 12-2 run and took a 62-55 lead with 3:27 remaining. Marquette continued fighting as Blockton nailed a trey and Davenport connected on a layup, which tied the game at 64-64 with 36 seconds left. PC banked in a jumper with 5.1 seconds remaining, but two of MU’s final chances did not fall.

Each team led by as many as 10 points and each team led for just over 17 minutes of play.

At the end of the first quarter Marquette trailed Providence, 24-17, but the Golden Eagles got to work in the second frame as they opened with a 17-2 run and held the Friars scoreless over six minutes. Yentz drained a three at the buzzer as the squad took a 37-33 lead into the break. Both teams shot well and nearly identical in the first half with MU hitting at 52 percent (13-25), including 8-of-12 from long range, while PC shot 12-25 for 48 percent and connected on 6-for-7 shots from three-point range.
