Golden Eagles Lose First Half Lead to Fall at Syracuse, 69-60
Feb. 6, 2010 Box Score | Box Score (PDF) | Watch Game Highlights SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A second half Syracuse rally proved to be the difference maker as the Marquette women’s basketball team fell 69-60 at Syracuse Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome.
Erica Morrow sunk seven free throws and Nichole Michael hit a critical layup while drawing the foul as part of 10-3 run over the final minute to give Syracuse the win. The Orange improves to 18-5 overall, 5-5 in BIG EAST play, while the loss puts MU at 13-9 overall, 4-5 in BIG EAST play.
Angel Robinson led Marquette with 17 points, while Jessica Pachko and Courtney Weibel each chipped in 12 points.
Syracuse, who overcame a sloppy first half and five point half-time differential, outscored MU 46-32 in the second frame. Nicole Michael led all scorers with 18 points, while Carmen Tyson-Thomas scored 14 points off the bench – all in the second half – and Juanita Ward added 12 points.
Down by two, 59-57, Erica Morrow sunk three free throws after being fouled on her 3-point attempt with 55.8 seconds to play.
Marquette’s defense sparked its offense as the Golden Eagles forced 17 Syracuse turnovers in the first half, scoring 18 points off the Orange’s miscues.
Syracuse scored seven of the final nine points to close out the first half, but MU still went into the intermission up, 28-23.
Coming out of the break, the Orange went on a 12-5 run to go ahead 35-33 in the first five minutes of the second stanza.
From there, the Golden Eagles meticulously chipped away at the Orange’s advantage over the next 10 minutes with back-to-back triples by Weibel to put the score at 57-53 with 4:15. Pachko sunk a pair of free throws with 3:21 to play to bring MU within two points, 57-55, but were unable to get any closer.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Tuesday when they host USF at the Al McGuire Center at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on CBS College Sports.
