Feb. 6, 2015
CINCINNATI, Ohio--Freshman Kenisha Bell paced the Marquette women's basketball team (5-18, 1-11) with 19 points at Xavier (14-9, 6-6) on Friday evening, but the Musketeers came away with a 91-72 victory at the Cintas Center.
Bell's 19 points led three MU players in double digits as senior Arlesia Morse recorded 12 points, while freshman Tia Elbert notched 10 points in the game. Morse went 4-for-4 from the free throw line, which extends her streak to 37 consecutive free throws dating back to Jan. 23.
Senior Apiew Ojulu was just shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Golden Eagles kept the game close within eight points in the opening five minutes of the second half, but was unable to cut the lead any closer. A three-pointer from Morse had MU trailing just 10 points, 62-52 at 11:52, but multiple miscues from Marquette helped the Musketeers extend their lead.
MU finished the night shooting 41.4 percent (24-58) from the field and connected on 20-for-25 shots from the free throw line.
Xavier jumped out to a quick 12-3 lead to open the game, but Marquette used an 11-4 run over a four minute stretch and was able to pull within two points, 16-14, at the 13:37 mark.
Morse drained a three-pointer at the 7:44 mark, but the Golden Eagles hit a four minute scoring drought that the Musketeers capitalized on scoring nine points in that frame. Sophomore McKayla Yentz broke the cold spree with two buckets from the charity stripe. MU went into the break trailing Xavier, 44-36.
The Golden Eagles combined to shoot 38.5 percent (10-26) from the field and connected on 13 of 14 attempts from the free throw line in the first half.
Xavier was led by Briana Glover with a game-high 26 points, while Jenna Crittendon tallied the Musketeers' first double double of the season with 17 points and 11 boards.
MU continues its road trip and will travel to Butler on Sunday, Feb. 8. Tip-off is slated for Noon CT on the BIG EAST Digital Network at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
