Marquette Earns a 60-56 Victory at Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. - It was a total team rebounding effort on Sunday at The Pavilion as the Marquette women's basketball team (12-11, 4-6) defeated Villanova (16-7, 5-5) 60-56. The Golden Eagles took down 42 rebounds, while holding the Wildcats to just 27.
MU was led by junior Katherine Plouffe and senior Sarina Simmons with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Sophomore Arlesia Morse tallied nine points and grabbed seven rebounds, while classmate Cristina Bigica and freshman Brooklyn Pumroy also pulled down seven boards. Every player who stepped on the court scored.
The Golden Eagles shot 43.9 percent (25-57) from the field as Villanova shot 41.2 percent (21-51), but MU's defense held the Wildcats to just 26.1 percent in the second half and 0-12 from beyond-the-arc.
Villanova was led by Laura Sweeney who recorded a game-high 26 points.
With 6:37 left in the game the score was tied at 49, until Pumroy found Plouffe under the basket for the go-ahead layup at the 5:45 mark. The Golden Eagles would not trail again.
In the first half, MU shot a stellar 55.2-percent (16-29), but the Wildcats shot just as well going 15-26 (57.7-percent). The Golden Eagles outrebounded Villanova 16-10 and neither team led more than five points. The score was tied five times in the first frame.
Marquette will conclude its three-game road trip on Wednesday at Cincinnati. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
