Sarina Simmons led the way for the Golden Eagles

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Marquette women's basketball team fell at Cincinnati, 54-52 on Wednesday evening as the Bearcats converted a layup in the final second of play. Senior Sarina Simmons led MU with 19 points.

Marquette falls to 12-12 overall and 4-7 in BIG EAST action, while the Bearcats move to 9-15 with a 1-10 mark in conference play.

Simmons shot 7-13 from the field, including one three-point shot. She had a career-high-tying five blocks with two assists and two steals. Sophomore Arlesia Morse and freshman Brooklyn Pumroy each tallied nine points. Pumroy grabbed five rebounds and had four steals.

Dayeesha Hollins led the Bearcats with 19 points.

The Golden Eagles shot 40.4 percent (21-52) in the game, while UC shot just 38 percent (19-50). The Bearcats outrebounded MU, 34-31.

Both teams went on a scoring drought for over five minutes until Simmons converted two free-throws, which gave Marquette a 52-48 lead with 2:29 left in the game. Before the game-winning layup, Cincinnati made four free-throws to tie the game at 52 apiece. The Golden Eagles did not hit a field goal in the final 7:35 of action.

MU trailed 16-6 in the first half after a six-minute scoring drought, but came back with a 13-2 run to lead the Bearcats 19-18 with 8:32 left in the half. After UC converted a free-throw to take a 27-26 lead, neither team scored in the final 2:58 of play.

The Golden Eagles shot 45.8 percent (11-24) in the frame, while Cincinnati shot 34.4 percent (11-32). Simmons led the squad with eight points at the break.

The Golden Eagles will return home on Sunday, Feb. 17 to host Notre Dame at 1:30 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and will be MU's 8th annual Play4Kay breast cancer awareness pink game.
