Feb. 19, 2017
MILWAUKEE- Behind a career-best 28 points from sophomore point guard Danielle King, the Marquette University women's basketball squad was able to top No. 17/15 DePaul, 96-81, on Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.
With the victory, the Golden Eagles (20-7, 11-5) have now hit the 20-win mark for the first time since 2013-14. Additionally, the win marks the first time that MU has beat DePaul twice in one season since the 2003-04 campaign, and is the fourth triumph of the season for the Golden Eagles against a top-25 ranked team.
King led the offensive attack for Marquette from the tip, as the Chicago, Illinois, native played the full 40 minutes and dished out a personal-best nine assists and five rebounds to couple her 28-point (11-13 FG) display.
Along with King, The Golden Eagles received poised efforts from Erika Davenport and Natisha Hiedeman on the afternoon. Davenport finished one rebound shy of a double-double, racking up 19 points and nine boards on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting from the field, while Hiedeman chipped in 19 points of her own shooting 4-of-8 from downtown.
DePaul (22-6, 14-2), who saw its six-game winning streak snapped, was once again paced by senior guard Brooke Schulte on the offensive side. The BIG EAST's second leading scorer poured in 26 points on an 11-19 effort from the field and grabbed 10 boards for her eighth double-double of the season.
The Golden Eagles came out of the gate in impressive form, hitting their first nine shots from the field to build an early 21-8 advantage over the first-place Blue Demons. MU's scorching hot pace from the field continued throughout the opening quarter, as the team posted a season-high 38-point frame.
Following the win against the Blue Demons, Marquette will continue its regular season-ending home stand on Friday, Feb 24, when Georgetown visits the Al McGuire center for 7:00 p.m. Central time showdown.
