Marquette Claims BIG EAST Regular Season Crown

QUEENS, N.Y. --For the first time in Marquette women's basketball history, the Golden Eagles have won the BIG EAST regular season title with a 76-57 win over St. John's on Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.
Marquette (21-8, 15-3) shares the title with DePaul, but due to tie-breaking procedures claims the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament, also for the first time in program history. The Golden Eagles will begin their tournament title defense against the winner of No. 8 Butler or No. 9 Providence on Sunday, March 4 at Noon Central time at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. Marquette last won a regular season conference title in 1999-2000, when the Golden Eagles took first in Conference USA.
Allazia Blockton led four MU players in double digits with 19 points, while Amani Wilborn poured in 18. Blockton also passed Lisa Oldenburg for seventh all-time in Marquette history. Erika Davenport recorded her ninth double-double of the season and second-straight with 12 points and 11 rebounds and Danielle King added 11 points.
The Golden Eagles played tight defense on St. John's (16-13, 9-9 BIG EAST) all afternoon, holding the Red Storm to under 40 percent shooting. Maya Singleton and Andrayah Adams were the only players to hit double-figures, each notching 11.
Marquette held a 36-25 lead at halftime behind 50 percent (14-28) shooting. The Golden Eagles took 22 points in the paint and 13 from St. John's turnovers. The Golden Eagles extended their lead in the third, outscoring St. John's 20-13 to take a commanding advantage and take the largest lead of the game at 20 to start the fourth.
The Golden Eagles open post-season play in the BIG EAST Tournament in Chicago, which will go from March 3 to March 6 from Wintrust Arena.
