Marquette Tops Villanova, 53-49, in BIG EAST Tournament First Round Action

HARTFORD, Conn. - The Marquette women's basketball team defeated No. 15 seed Villanova, 53-49, in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship presented by New York Life Insurance Friday evening at the XL Center. With the win, the Golden Eagles (16-14) advance to the second round to play No. 7 seed DePaul at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT at the XL Center Saturday.
With Marquette up, six points, 49-43, with 2:36 remaining, Villanova scored on back-to-back possessions to come within two points, 49-47, with 54 seconds to play.
Angel Robinson drew a foul on the ensuing possession and drained two free throws to go ahead four points, 51-47, but Jesse Carey scored an easy bucket in the lane to keep Villanova within two points, 51-49.
On MU's final trip down the court, Robinson drove to the basket and converted with 11 seconds to play to secure the win for the Golden Eagles.
Maria Getty led Villanova, who finishes its season, 14-16 overall, with 17 points and six rebounds.
The Golden Eagles held a 25-18 advantage at half time and owned as much as an 11-point lead in the second half.
For the game, Marquette shot 38.9 percent from the floor (21-of-54) and out-rebounded the Wildcats, 38-33.
