Marquette Advances in BIG EAST Championship with 66-43 Victory Over Pittsburgh

HARTFORD, Conn. - It was a total team effort for the No. 10 seed Marquette women's basketball team (16-14) on Friday evening as the Golden Eagles defeated No. 15 seed Pittsburgh, 66-43, at the XL Center in the first round of the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship.

MU was led by junior Katie Young who recorded 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds handed out three assists and picked up two steals. Junior Katherine Plouffe was one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards. She also gave out four assists with three steals. Sophomore Lauren Tibbs notched eight points, while senior Sarina Simmons and sophomores Apiew Ojulu and Margeaux Dupuy, each tallied seven points apiece. Simmons dished out a team-best six assists. Every player available saw time on the court and scored at least four points.

The Golden Eagles shot 40.9 percent (27-66) for the game with five three-point shots. MU outrebounded the Panthers, 48-36 and forced 21 turnovers.

Marquette used a 20-6 run over seven minutes of play in the first half and took a 32-17 lead over the Panthers with 1:48 remaining in the half. Plouffe hit a jumper at the 1:16 mark as the Golden Eagles led 34-22 at the break. Young had 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting. MU shot 37.5 percent (15-40), while the Panthers went 10-for-26 from the field for 38.5 percent. The Golden Eagles owned the edge on the boards 26-16.

With the win, Marquette improves to 5-7 all-time in the BIG EAST Championship.

The Golden Eagles will face No. 7 seed DePaul on Saturday evening. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. CT and will be aired live on the BIG EAST TV Network.
