ROSEMONT, Ill.--Redshirt freshman Ashley Santos sank two free throws with six seconds left in regulation, to lift No. 5 seed Marquette over No. 4 Villanova, 56-53 in the quarterfinals of the 2014 BIG EAST Tournament, Sunday evening at Allstate Arena.

With the game tied at 53, senior Katherine Plouffe connected on two shots at the charity stripe with 18.4 seconds on the clock to give Marquette (21-9) a two-point lead, then followed with a block in the paint, which gave the Golden Eagles the ball back, leading to the foul on Santos.

Plouffe recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles, while sophomore guard Brooklyn Pumroy recorded 11 points, and senior Katie Young grabbed 10 boards.

The Golden Eagles held Villanova scoreless for a five-minute stretch in the second half and used an 11-3 run to extend their lead to 42-33 with 10:01 left in the game. The Wildcats used their own run right after a timeout and outscored Marquette 14-4 in a seven-minute stretch, which put them in front for the first time in the second half, 47-46 with 3:28 left to play.

Marquette led throughout much of the first half and the Golden Eagles defense forced 12 turnovers in the first frame, capitalizing on 14 points off of those miscues. MU went scoreless in the final two minutes of play after a pair of free throws from Katie Young and Villanova used an 8-2 run to close out the first half. The Golden Eagles went into the break with a 27-25 advantage.

Villanova (22-8) was led by Devon Kane with 19 points, while Taylor Holeman recorded 13. MU owned a 43-34 advantage on the glass, while shooting 35.7 percent (20-56) in the game.

The Golden Eagles will face No. 1 seed DePaul on Monday, March 10 in the semifinals. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1 at 5:30 p.m. Central time. Marquette will provide a fan bus again for those wanting to return to Allstate Arena for the game. The cost is $40/person and will leave the Al McGuire Center at 2:15 p.m.
