Marquette Defeats UW-Whitewater, 78-59

MILWAUKEE- The Marquette University women's basketball team opened it's 2013-14 season with an exhibition and earned a 78-59 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Friday night at the Al McGuire Center. 

Senior forward Katherine Plouffe led all scorers with 26 points and junior forward Apiew Ojulu added 15. The Golden Eagles held UWW to 33.3 percent shooting from the floor and earned 44 of their points inside the Warhawks paint.  Marquette capitalized on Whitewater's turnovers, scoring on all 12 of their mistakes.

For most of the first half, both teams went back and forth on the leader board. The lead changed seven times during the half. In the final four minutes, Marquette pulled away for good to finish 11 points ahead going into intermission. Ojulu scored eight of her nine points in the the last three minutes for a 40-29 finish at the half. MU shot 40.6 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the line in the half. 

Marquette continued their surge and came out strong in the second half. MU's largest lead came within the first five minutes of the half after Plouffe tipped in the ball for a 20 point lead at 55-35. Plouffe's performance soared in the final 20 minutes and scored 15 or her 26 points and recorded four of her seven rebounds. The Golden Eagles shot 50 percent from the floor and the line in the second half. Out of the 10 players, nine recorded a basket and three notched points in double digits. Senior guard Katie Young clinched a team high 11 rebounds while junior guard Arlesia Morse finished with 12 points. 

Redshirt freshman Ashley Santos provided a spark off the bench and recorded six points in her official Al McGuire court debut. Wisconsin native and freshman guard McKayla Yentz recorded a block and notched two rebounds in her first collegiate game. 

MU will begin its regular season with a home opener against Wake Forest on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center.
