MILWAUKEE--The Marquette University women's basketball team got its first look at an opponent as the squad pulled through to defeat the Minnesota State Mavericks, 78-75, in the team's exhibition game Sunday at the Al McGuire Center.

Marquette was led by sophomore Allazia Blockton with a game-high 22 point, while classmate Erika Davenport poured in 18 points and 10 rebounds. Fellow sophomores Amani Wilborn and Natisha Hiedeman were also in double digits with 12 points apiece.

In her Marquette debut, freshman Altia Anderson grabbed three rebounds in just four minutes of action.

The Golden Eagles shot 37.3 percent (28-75) from the field with just three, three-point shots in the game, but had an excellent assist-to-turnover ratio at 15-to-8, while forcing 25 miscues from Minnesota State.

The Golden Eagles started out strong with a 10-0 run early in the first quarter in what turned out to be a very back-and-forth matchup.

After trailing 41-38 at halftime, Marquette stepped it up defensively, and put additional pressure on the Mavericks, which helped limit the scoring as Minnesota State hit just five shots in the third quarter.

After hitting just one of eighteen three-point shots, Hiedeman managed two back-to-back three-pointers to put the Golden Eagles up six points, 65-59, with 6:44 left to play in the game. Davenport sank a jumper with 1:34 remaining, which kept MU in front, 74-65, its largest lead in the quarter, but the Mavericks chipped away at that lead hitting three consecutive shots in the game's final minute. The Golden Eagles converted 7-of-9 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Marquette will officially open the 2016-2017 season Friday, November 11 hosting Longwood at the Al McGuire Center at 7 p.m. Central time, steaming live on
