Marquette Rallies Past Southwest Baptist in Exhibition, 70-68

MILWAUKEE--Trailing by as much as 11 points in the third quarter, the Marquette University women's basketball team rallied back and opened the season with a 70-68 exhibition win over Southwest Baptist University.
It was a game of back-and-forth as the score was tied 13 times and had 22 lead changes with both teams playing for the first time under the new rule changes, which most notably include a switch to four-10 minute quarters.
A trio of freshmen led MU in scoring with Allazia Blockton pouring in 15 points, Danielle King added 13 and Natisha Hiedeman tallied 11 points, all in the third quarter. Hiedeman also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out five assists.
After trailing 34-31 at halftime, Marquette showed its persistence after trailing 42-31 at the 8:09 mark in the third quarter. After a 16-4 run, the Golden Eagles had regained a one-point lead, 47-46 as King connected on a layup. MU also hit four of their five three-point shots in the second half.
MU trailed by two points, 68-66 with 3:49 remaining in the game, but King nailed a jumper and Blockton broke through and was able to sink a layup, which put the Golden Eagles in front, 70-68 with under two minutes remaining in the game. Southwest Baptist didn't foul on the final possession and MU grabbed a team rebound off of a King missed three-point attempt to hang on to the two point victory.
The Golden Eagles will officially open the 2015-16 season on Friday, Nov. 13, when they travel to Green Bay for a 7 p.m. Central time tip. The Golden Eagles will host IUPUI in their home opener on Nov. 16, at noon CT for their annual MPS day.
