MU Defeats Wake Forest 90-71 In Home Opener

MILWAUKEE--The Marquette University women's basketball team defeated Wake Forest 90-71 in its season opener at the Al McGuire Center on Saturday afternoon.

Four Golden Eagles recorded double-digit point totals in Saturday's action. Senior forward Katherine Plouffe led the way with a career-high 26 points, including 16 in the first half alone. The 6-3 forward added 12 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end. Along with Plouffe's strong effort offensively, she was also very active on the defensive side of the ball, recording five steals.

Junior Apiew Ojulu netted 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field. After only one field goal and three total points in the first half, Ojulu exploded for 19 points in just the second half.

Sophomore point guard Brooklyn Pumroy tied a career high with 17 points, and senior forward Katie Young grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds. Young notched a double-double on the day, adding 11 points.

The trio of Ojulu, Plouffe and Pumroy totaled 65 of MU's 90 points.

MU held a five point advantage at the end of the half, and never looked back, stretching the lead to as high as 21 points in the second half.

Chelsea Douglas paced the Wake Forest offense, netting 26 points including three three-point baskets.

MU returns to action Monday night, Nov. 11 at the Al McGuire Center, when it hosts Arkansas Pine-Bluff at 7 p.m. Central time.
