Marquette Easily Handles Marshall, 67-46
Nov. 23, 2012
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Juniors Katherine Plouffe and Katie Young tallied double-doubles as the Marquette women's basketball team (2-1) earned a convincing 67-46 victory over Marshall (2-2) on Friday evening in the Texas A&M Thanksgiving Classic.
Plouffe led all scorers with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Young tallied 10 points and pulled down a career-high 12 boards.
"We played good team basketball today," head coach Terri Mitchell said. "I thought we distributed the ball well and looked for each other. We rebounded the ball extremely well and looked to push. The biggest thing I was proud of was in the first half our defense was not as focused, we went in and talked about it at half time and because of our defensive effort holding Marshall to 23-percent in the second half, that was a big reason we were able to pull away."
For the third consecutive game four players scored in double figures. In addition to Plouffe and Young, sophomore Apiew Ojulu recorded 12 points and classmate Chelsie Butler tallied 11. Every player who saw the court recorded at least one point.
Redshirt freshman Lauren Tibbs shot 4-for-6 from the field and posted a career-high eight points, while sophomore Arleshia Morse dished out a career-best six assists.
The Golden Eagles held a 36-26 lead heading into halftime, but Marshall came out of the break to cut the lead to five points, 38-33, at the 1:40 mark.
Marquette responded to go on an 8-0 run over three minutes, taking a 46-33 lead after Ojulu connected on a free throw.
A trey and a jumper from the Thundering Herd put them back to within eight points, 46-38 with 11:46 remaining in the game, but that was as close as they would get as MU used a 21-8 run to close out the game.
The Golden Eagles shot 38.8 percent from the field (26-for-67) and out-rebounded Marshall, 51-46. MU was 12-for-18 from the free throw line, while the Thundering Herd went 0-for-2.
Marquette will return to close out the Texas A&M Classic against host, No. 24/RV Texas A&M. Tip-off is slated for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 25.
