MU Defeats Crosstown Foe Milwaukee, 85-80

MILWAUKEE- The Marquette University women's basketball team (2-3) prevailed over crosstown foe Milwaukee by a score of 85-80 Wednesday night at the Al McGuire Center.
Freshman Kenisha Bell recorded a career-high 21 points and classmate Tia Elbert added a career-best nine assists in the Golden Eagles' winning effort. Senior Apiew Ojulu tallied a season-high 16 points, while classmate Arlesia Morse notched her fifth game in double digits with 11 points, including two 3-point shots.
Redshirt junior Lauren Tibbs paced Marquette in the second half with 12 points.
A late tip-in by McKayla Yentz off of a missed free throw gave the Golden Eagles a 43-42 advantage heading into halftime. Bell led Marquette in scoring, recording 13 points while shooting 75.0 percent from the field in the first stanza. Marquette was also able to overcome 15 early turnovers and a 71.4 percent shooting percentage from beyond the arc by Milwaukee in the half.
The second half was a back-and-forth battle before Tibbs scored five straight baskets midway through the frame and helped the Golden Eagles open a 66-61 advantage.
A late layup by Christina Bigica with eight seconds remaining in the contest sealed the victory for Marquette.
Milwaukee's Ashley Green led all scorers with 26 to record her fourth-straight game with at least 20 points this season.
The Golden Eagles finished the game shooting 50.8 percent (32-63) from the field while adding 16 free throws, 12 of which came in the second half. The squad also outrebounded the Panthers, 44-34and grabbed 44 points in the paint.
Marquette will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 30 when they host South Dakota. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT at the Al McGuire Center.
