Four Players Score in Double Figures as MU Defeats Iona, 64-50

MILWAUKEE - Courtney Weibel scored a season-high 14 points as the Marquette women's basketball team earned a 64-50 win over Iona Wednesday evening at the Al McGuire Center. The Golden Eagles improve to 6-1 overall, while the Gaels fall to 1-5 on the season.
Along with Weibel, Marquette finished with four players scoring in double figures. Paige Fiedorowicz also contributed 14 points, while Angel Robinson added 10 points. Sarina Simmons registered her third double-double of the season with 10 points and career-high 17 rebounds. For the game, the Golden Eagles knocked down 21-of-58 attempts from the floor, and scored 18 points from the charity stripe. MU held Iona to shoot a meager 31.5 percent for the game, including 28.6 percent in the second half. Kristina Ford led Iona with 11 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Marquette held as much as a 17-point lead in the first half but the Gaels rallied to come as close as six points, 28-22, with 4:30 left to play. Marquette responded with made free throws by Katherine Plouffe and Fiedorowicz, and a pair of triples from Courtney Weibel to go into the intermission ahead, 37-22. Weibel made four-of-five attempts from three-point land in the first half to finish with a first-half high 12 points. Marquette maintained its double-digit lead throughout the second half not letting Iona come closer than 12 points for the remainder of the game. MU, meanwhile, took its largest lead of the game, 55-34, with 8:36 to play. The Golden Eagles will hit the road for their next two games with their first stop at Vermont, Saturday, Dec. 4 at 3:30 p.m. CT. Game Notes Sarina Simmons registered a career-best and Al McGuire Center record 17 rebounds. The 17 rebounds is also the most recorded by any player in the BIG EAST this season. It is the third time this season she has post 10-or-more rebounds in a game. MU's 47 total rebounds is also a team season high. Courtney Weibel's season-high 14 points marks the seventh time of her career she has scored in double figures. Weibel last scored in double figures on March 18, 2010 when she scored 10 points against Eastern Illinois. Weibel made just her third career two-point basket with 8:54 left in the game to give MU a 53-34 lead.
Angel Robinson recorded a career-high eight steals and stands fifth on MU's all-time steals list with 225 for her career.
