Marquette Outlasts Fordham, 51-48

MILWAUKEE - Despite a late threat, the Marquette women's basketball team (4-2) pulled out a 51-48 victory over Fordham (5-2) on Saturday evening at the Al McGuire Center.
Junior Katherine Plouffe was near a double-double with nine points and a season-high 13 rebounds.
Sophomore Cristina Bigica recorded a season-high eight points and pulled down a career-best seven boards in the game.
Marquette continued to dominate the boards as a team and outrebounded the Rams, 55-33.
With 4:34 left to play in the game, the Golden Eagles led47-38 after Pumroy connected on a free-throw. The Rams cut the lead to three points, 47-44 after a layup with 50 seconds remaining then sank a three-point basket with 26 seconds remaining as MU led, 49-47. Simmons converted one-of-two shots at the foul line to push the lead back to three points. Plouffe also hit one-of-two free throws in the final seconds, which was enough to give the Golden Eagles a 51-48 victory.
MU shot 19-for-54 (35.2-percent) from the field and went 11-for-22 from the charity stripe.
Marquette quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first half. Junior Katie Young hit a jumper at the 9:55 mark, which extended the lead to 17-9, but Fordham's offense responded and went on a 7-2 run, which closed the gap three points at 19-16. The Golden Eagles led 23-16 at halftime.
Plouffe had pulled down eight rebounds at the break and led MU with six points on 3-for-9 shooting. The Golden Eagles shot 10-for-30 for 33.3-percent in the first half.
Fordham's Marah Strickland led all scorers with 14 points.
Marquette will travel to Madison on Wednesday, Dec. 5 for a matchup with instate-foe, Wisconsin at the Kohl Center. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. It will be the Golden Eagles only road game in December.
