MU Drops BIG EAST Opener at No. 3/3 Notre Dame, 95-42

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (AP) - Sarina Simmons scored a team-high 14 points but the Marquette University women's basketball team dropped its BIG EAST Conference opener, 95-42, to No. 3 Notre Dame Wednesday evening at the Purcell Pavilion.
The Irish (8-1, 1-0 Big East) scored 51 points in the first half for the third time this season as they won their fifth straight game.
Natalie Novosel and Brittany Mallory 11 scored 11 points for Notre Dame. Devereaux Peters had 10 rebounds and nine points.
Simmons led Marquette (5-5, 0-1) with 14 points, while sophomore forward Katherine Plouffe chipped in nine.
Notre Dame’s smothering team defense dismantled the Golden Eagles, turning 37 turnovers into 46 points. Notre Dame was also able to pass the ball inside, resulting in 52 points in the paint.
Notre Dame forced four early turnovers and used a 9-0 run to jump out to an early 11-3 edge at the 17:15 mark.
The defensive intensity continued to pay dividends in the next six minutes as the Irish forced another five turnovers and converted most of them into easy layups for a 29-12 edge.
Notre Dame had 15 points off turnovers in the first nine minutes of play. Notre Dame had a 51-23 lead at halftime.
Novosel and Diggins each had 11 at halftime while the Golden Eagles’ Simmons also had 11.
At the half, Notre Dame had 15 assists on 21 field goals. The Irish forced 17 turnovers, including nine steals.
Notre Dame forced the Golden Eagles into eight consecutive turnovers early in the second half, building the lead to 65-25.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 10 against Iona at 5 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center.
