Plouffe's Double-Double Leads Marquette Past Iona, 93-44

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's basketball team sprinted out to an early 20-3 lead and held on for a 93-44 victory over Iona Saturday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.

The Golden Eagles (6-5) were led by forward Katherine Plouffe's third double-double of the season as the sophomore notched 20 points and 11 rebounds and five assists. Freshman guard Arlesia Morse added 18 for MU, while Apiew Ojulu and Sarina Simmons contributed 15 and 13, respectively.

Sophomore point guard Gabi Minix tallied a career-high 11 assists to go along with seven points and six rebounds.

Senior forward Kristina Ford finished with 17 points and was the only player in double digits for the Gaels (4-5), who shot just 25 percent from the floor in the loss (15-of-60).

The Golden Eagles shot a season-best 57.8 percent (37-of-64) as they outscored Iona, 56-14, in the paint.

Marquette shot out of the gate to a 20-3 lead and ended the first half with a 50-17 advantage.

Morse led MU with 13 points in the opening frame, while Simmons added 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Golden Eagles held a 28-11 rebounding advantage in the first half and ended the game up 46-22 in that category. Iona shot just 20 percent in the opening stanza and was paced by seven points from Ford.

Marquette's 50 first half points are the most it has notched to open a contest this season.

Minix and Simmons buried their first 3-point attempts of the game and Ojulu went coast-to-coast for a layup and foul before the Gaels reached the scoreboard.
