Plouffe's Career-High 23 Leads Marquette Past Navy, 73-65

MILWAUKEE - With over three thousand Milwaukee Public School children in attendance, junior Katherine Plouffe scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Marquette University women's basketball team past Navy, 73-65, Wednesday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.

Marquette (5-5) was led by Plouffe's 23 points, 17 of which came in the second half, while senior Sarina Simmons chipped in 11 points and four rebounds. The Edmonton, Alberta native scored the Golden Eagles' first seven points of the second half to help MU overcome a 12-0 run that Navy used to build a 42-36 lead. Marquette went 31-of-57 from the field (54.4 percent) for the afternoon.

Navy (6-6) shot 52.8 percent for the game. Junior Alix Membreno led the Midshipmen with 19 points. Classmates Audrey Bauer and Kara Pollinger added 13 points each, including nine points from behind the arc from Pollinger.

Junior Katie Young added a spark off the bench for MU with 13 points and three rebounds. Young was 3-of-4 from the three point line to tie her season high. Marquette added a total of 30 points off the bench, outscoring the Midshipmen by 23 in that category.

The Golden Eagles shot 15-of-24 (62.5-percent) in the first half and lead by as many as six, before Navy closed with the final six points of the half to knot the score at 36-36 at the break.

Marquette pulled ahead 49-46 on an eight point run in the middle of the second half to keep the lead for good. With a minute left, Young stole the ball and added two free throws to finish the game 73-63.

Marquette will play again tomorrow Dec. 20 against Dartmouth at the Al McGuire Center at 7 p.m. The game can be viewed live on with Kent Sommerfeld and Kyle Dlabay on the call.
