Dec. 20, 2013
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's basketball team concluded non-conference action with a 71-54 victory over Denver on Friday evening at the Al McGuire Center.
The Golden Eagles (9-2) were led by 16 points from junior guard Arlesia Morse, while redshirt sophomore center Lauren Tibbs added a season-high 12 points and 11 rebounds for the first double-double of her career. Katie Young also contributed 12 points in the win.
Sophomore guard Paige Bradley posted 16 points to lead the Pioneers (1-10) as the only Denver player in double figures.
Morse paced Marquette in the second half with 13 points and gave the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the evening at 52-34 with 11:42 remaining. That basket capped a 13-2 MU run, which was started by a Morse triple at the 15:16 mark of the second half.
This came on the heels of a career-high 28-point outburst for Morse in Marquette's 79-71 overtime victory over Oral Roberts on Wednesday afternoon.
Marquette used an 11-0 run about three minutes into the game to jump out to a 17-7 lead. The Pioneers responded to pull within a pair, 28-26, on a three-point play from Jesse Spittel, but the Golden Eagles took a 33-27 lead into the half.
Apiew Ojulu opened the scoring in the second half with the first 3-pointer of her career.
Tibbs led the Golden Eagles in the first half with eight points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the floor. She also added five rebounds in the opening 20 minutes and connected on her first five field goal attempts of the evening.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, Dec. 28 at Butler in their first BIG EAST Conference game of the season.
